God’s Personality

God’s Personality

I’ve been wondering lately… does God have a personality?

All humans have what we call “personalities”. The word is sort of hard to define, but the Merriam-Webster says this:

personality: noun

  1. the visible aspect of one’s character as it impresses others.
  2. a person as an embodiment of a collection of qualities.
  3. the quality of being a person; existence as a self-conscious human being; personal identity.
  4. the essential character of a person.

We all have a unique blend of mannerisms, ways of speaking, facial expressions. We all have unique brains that perceive the world a certain way, and we all respond to what we perceive differently.

We all have preferences. We all have things that especially excite us, or bore us, or make us curious, or frustrate us. What is wonderfully interesting to one person is killingly dull to another.

So if Jesus is in flesh, fully God- but also fully human- then He must have a personality. I suppose we see bits and pieces of it in the Gospels, but really now… Reading a biography about someone, no matter how thorough and detailed, is simply NOT the same as meeting them in real life.

So what does Jesus “personality” seem like? What were His unique mannerisms? How would His friends have described Him, humanly speaking? Would they have called Him witty, or wise? Would they have mentioned the way He laughed, or the way He walked?

An even stranger question…

Does Jesus have a different personality than God the Father? And what about the Holy Spirit? God is Trinity- one, yet three… could He have different personalities within the same Godhead, or… is that too weird?

I’m so curious. I think I’ve always imagined certain things about God’s “personality”, but me, a finite human, able to imagine what the Creator of the Universe is really like?? I don’t think so.

We all have these things called “personalities- or “an embodiment of a collection of qualities” that make us each unique human beings. And we are made in God’s image. So surely, He has a visible aspect of His essence, His character.

God’s character and essence is certainly seen in His Word. We can see it in His created world. Yet doesn’t it only get you excited to meet Him face-to-face, and see what He is really like!? To hear His voice, to see the way He smiles when He looks at you?
